DR ROLAND CHIA,

PKR Sabah Treasurer Dr Roland Chia urged the Sabah State Government to emulate the economic policy of the Pakatan Rakyat Selangor State in giving out at least RM1000 or even more to Sabahans students who have successfully gained admission to both private and government of higher education for undergraduate studies. The criteria being that their combined parental earnings are less than RM1500.

Scholarships and study awards must not just be confined to excellent students, but also to the poor in which statistics in Sabah indicated that 1 in 4 Sabahans are below the poverty line.

If the government is sincere in eradicating poverty , education is the key. Most importantly is to facilitate and to assist the lower income group in this manner.

According to statistics, 33,262 students sat for the SPM exams and another 5000 students sat for the STPM exams in 2009, if 20% of them who qualified in this category, then the government would need to folk only out about RM12 million for this noble cause. Whilst billions/ millions have been spent of mega projects

According to Dr. Roland Chia , one complainant highlighted to him that he has to spend close to RM5000 just to send his son to study in a local government institution in Kuala Lumpur. The high costs included airfare, hotel accommodation, incidental & misc costs charged by the institution.

The question is how could a typical farmer or a villager afford to spend such big sum money to send their children to study. Many of them would just hold on to the offer letters and cry because it was a dream unfulfilled while their peers are making preparation to enter colleges as early as July 2010. This certainly does not augur well with the BN government in promoting human capital especially to our Sabahans.
