‘Global excuse for slashes misleading’ Posted: 15 Jan 2014 11:22 PM PST Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim today accused the government of misleading the public on the need to cut subsidies as commodity prices were falling worldwide. Adding that it was unnecessary pain that led to higher overall inflation, he said that subsidy cuts on petrol and sugar was wrongly timed. “The excuse that prices must rise to adjust to global market is misleading and confusing,” he told reporters at the PKR headquarters. The PKR leader gave figures to show that crude oil prices have eased to US$106.80 in 2014 compared to US$111 per barrel in 2012. Over the same period, the average petrol prices per litre rose to RM2.10 from RM1.90. Similarly, international sugar price fell to US15.2 cents per pound from 21.6 cents between 2012-2014. In Malaysia, prices per kilogramme rose from RM2.50-RM2.84 over the same period.
Anwar: Is Zaid getting his news only from Utusan? Posted: 15 Jan 2014 11:21 PM PST PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said former law minister Zaid Ibrahim is ignorant of the former’s stand on the Allah issue because he probably reads only Umno-linked Utusan Malaysia. Zaid yesterday urged Anwar to make his stand clear to resolve the controversy that has divided Malaysians. “Zaid must be reading only Utusan. If you read Harakah, The Rocket or Suara Keadilan, our statement is clear. “I have not strayed on this issue,” Anwar told reporters at PKR’s headquarters in Petaling Jaya today. Specifically, Anwar said he disagreed with Jais’ raid of Bible Society Malaysia (BSM) and its seizure of 321 copies of the Malay and Iban bibles, and the manner in which it was carried out. However, he said, as the Islamic body was not directly under state control but under the sultan, the Pakatan state government can only advise the rulers on the matter. Anwar said Pakatan Rakyat is sticking to its 2010 stand to allow non-Muslims to use ‘Allah’ on certain conditions, countering criticism that the coalition is not taking a stand on the controversial raid on Jan 2. The conditions are that the use of ‘Allah’ is not misused, in particularly to solicit Muslims to convert to Christianity.
Azmin still a PKNS board member, says Anwar Posted: 15 Jan 2014 11:12 PM PST Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today threw his support behind his loyalist Azmin Ali (pic) to stay on the Selangor State Development Corporation ( PKNS) board, setting up a battle with popular Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim over the state’s main economic driver. Anwar said Azmin’s removal did not follow proper procedure and, as such, was invalid. “The general manager does not have the power to remove any board members. “The decision can only be made by the exco and the menteri besar. As such, Azmin is still a board member,” he said at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya today. Anwar, who is the state’s economic adviser, said the entire episode was due to “some confusion” between the board and the state government. This follows differing accounts leading to Azmin’s removal. In a two-paragraph statement, PKNS had said that Azmin’s removal was the state government’s decision and not by its general manager, as claimed by Khalid. “Azmin’s tenure remains until 2015 and I have not been informed otherwise,” said Anwar, adding that he would raise the issue with Khalid. Azmin, who is also at the press conference, refused to elaborate further, only saying that the clarification made by Anwar was sufficient and “crystal clear”. “Let us resolve this problem amicably,” he said. Azmin received the letter informing him of his removal from the Selangor-owned developer board last week. On Wednesday, Khalid denied any involvement in the decision not to reappoint Azmin, insisting that the decision not to renew Azmin’s tenure came from PKNS general manager Othman Omar. “The decision was approved by the exco, which is not a party but a group. The decision to remove Azmin was made by Othman, who is the PKNS general manager,” Khalid had said, adding that the exco had not made any decision. Azmin and Khalid have long been at loggerheads over various issues, including Khalid’s appointment as Selangor menteri besar for a second term. As the head of Selangor PKR, Azmin did not take kindly to Khalid’s reappointment. However, PKR’s hands are tied as both PAS and DAP have 15 seats each in the state assembly and they wanted to retain Khalid. Azmin was also miffed when the PKR central leadership did not discuss the appointment of the Selangor menteri besar with the state party division. As a result, the chaotic relationship between the Selangor government under Khalid’s stewardship and state PKR under Azmin worsened. Azmin has been a fierce critic of Khalid’s administration for not spending enough on development in the state. He also criticised Khalid for focusing more on operating expenses instead of development, including the pay rise for the Selangor assemblymen announced last year.
