Anwar Asks if Obama Is Aware of Malaysia Election-Fraud Claims

Posted: 15 May 2013 07:10 AM PDT

Wall Street Journal

Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has found something new to fight over with the country's government: U.S. President Barack Obama's message of congratulations to Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Mr. Obama called Mr. Najib on May 13 after his win in Malaysia's parliamentary elections. Mr. Najib's National Front coalition won 60% of the seats in the national parliament, although Mr. Anwar's opposition alliance secured 51% of the popular vote on May 5 and is claiming that vote fraud tipped the balance in the government's favor.

President Barack Obama, shown at a recent news conference, called Prime Minister Najib Razak and 'welcomed the prime minister's efforts to address concerns about election irregularities,' according to the White House.

According to the White House, Mr. Obama "noted that Malaysians had turned out in record numbers to vote and welcomed the Prime Minister's efforts to address concerns about election irregularities." He also discussed trade issues and other matters.

The Malaysian government late on Tuesday issued a statement saying that the U.S. President "expressed his understanding and acceptance of the process and results" of the May 5 polls.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, though, Mr. Anwar questioned whether the U.S. was fully aware of the vote-fraud allegations, and also pointed out that Malaysian government statements on calls between Mr. Najib and Mr. Obama sometimes differ from the accounts provided by the White House.

Referring to Mr. Obama, Mr. Anwar said, "I don't think he is privy to the fact that there is this huge feeling and expression of anger and outrage against this mass rigging and fraud." Mr. Anwar went on to say that the U.S. had recognized elections under late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines and under Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.

"So I think it is also important that the Americans be given the facts to objectively evaluate people," Mr. Anwar said. "Do you accept the process when the media is not free? Do you accept the process when you cannot monitor the votes, where it went to? Do you accept the process when clearly the electoral list is compromised."

A Malaysian government spokesman said the government's account of Mr. Najib's conversation with Mr. Obama was accurate. Mr. Najib previously has denied the opposition's allegations of electoral fraud, as has Malaysia's Election Commission. Some political analysts have also noted that decades of gerrymandering have given a strong voice to rural electoral districts that tend to favor government parties.

But the closeness of the election race and the vote-fraud allegations are raising temperatures across this influential, predominantly Muslim country of 28 million people. Tens of thousands of people packed into a sports stadium last Wednesday to hear Mr. Anwar detail his fraud allegations, many wearing black T-shirts bearing the date of the May 5 elections. Subsequent rallies have been held in other areas, including Penang and Perak states.

In an interview last week, Mr. Anwar said the opposition is gathering what he described as further evidence of election fraud that he intends to submit to the country's Election Commission and local courts to try to force a re-run of the election in dozens of electoral districts.

Anwar says no street protest, but insists on more rallies

The Malaysian Insider

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) today distanced itself from calls for street protests to overturn the results of Election 2013, with Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim saying the pact will stick to indoor rallies to "voice their disgust" at alleged electoral fraud in the May 5 polls.

Anwar said calls for a mass street protest to oust the elected Barisan Nasional (BN) administration did not originate from PR but from affiliated non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

"These are just suggestions and it was never raised to the leadership and it is not something that is adopted by leadership," he told a press conference after chairing a PR presidential council meeting here.

Several activists were reported suggesting mass street protests to remove BN from power, alleging that the coalition had won Election 2013 fraudulently.

Among them was Hishammuddin Rais, a steering committee member of poll reforms group Bersih.

The left-leaning leader was reported to have told a forum on Monday that street demonstrations was the best recourse to affect a change in government, claiming that attempts to challenge the election results through legal channels would be futile.

PR has repeatedly alleged that Election 2013 was marred with widespread electoral fraud.

Anything But Umno (ABU) coordinator, Harris Ibrahim had also echoed the view. Online news portal Free Malaysia Today had quoted him as saying that voters should topple the BN government through street rallies.

PR has repeatedly alleged that Election 2013 was marred with widespread electoral fraud.

The Malaysian Insider had earlier reported that PR leaders have admitted that their post-Election 2013 public rallies, despite their mammoth following, will soon run out of steam and was unlikely to change the outcome of the just-concluded polls.

Amid incessant cries for re-election, newly-elected PR lawmakers said the events were merely to keep the momentum going for the federal opposition pact and to serve as a reminder to Malaysians that a majority 51 per cent of the electorate had voted out Barisan Nasional (BN) even though the pact returned to power.

They agreed that theirs was a losing battle as the odds were stacked against them, despite acknowledging the existence of legal avenues to challenge results in certain constituencies where they believe they have sufficient evidence of fraud.

But while most insist the rallies are necessary, a silent few in PR have agreed that it is time to move on and admit defeat before Malaysians begin to regard their leaders as "sore losers".

Anwar, however, insisted that the rallies are necessary as an avenue for the voters to voice their protest against the rigged results.

"We must allow the people to voice their disgust," he said.

PR lost its bid for Putrajaya in the May 5 polls last week, polling 89 seats to BN's 133, but picked up seven seats more than it did in Election 2008.

The federal opposition pact had cried foul when the overall results failed to reflect the popular vote trend, which saw PR polling 51 per cent to BN's 48 per cent, an outcome they blamed on gerrymandering and vote-rigging by their political foes.

Anwar immediately put his earlier retirement plans on hold to protest the election results, leading his team to hold a series of mammoth nationwide rallies to prove a majority of the Malaysian electorate support them.

After commanding large crowds in Petaling Jaya and Penang, PR held its third rally in Ipoh, Perak, last weekend, where Anwar vowed never to surrender until the polls results are validated and PR claims its rightful place at Putrajaya.

Election petitions: ‘Pakatan will face any challenge’

Pakatan Rakyat is willing to face any election petition or challenge that is mounted against its wins in Penang, Selangor and Kelantan.

Speaking to reporters today, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim said that, to his knowledge, there has been no dispute.

“If there is a compelling (case) against seats won by the DAP, PAS or PKR, we are prepared to open up. But there is none. There is not one," he after the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council meeting.

Kuantan swept by ‘Blackout 505′ rally no. 4

Harakah Daily

The fourth ‘Blackout 505′ rally to protest sham election took place in Kuantan last night, attracting some 30,000 people who tried to squeeze their way into Jalan Beserah near the PKR office.

The rally is the latest addressed by Pakatan Rakyat leaders to highlight public displeasure over the manner in which the May 5 polls were conducted by the Election Commission in cohorts with BN.

Last-minute change of venue quickly spread, and tens of thousands of people came donned in black – the colour chosen to symbolise the death of democracy in the country.

Besides the main speaker Anwar Ibrahim, several PR leaders also spoke, including PAS vice president Husam Musa who made a surprise appearance.

Others included PKR’s Fauzi Abdul Rahman, Johari Abdul, Badrul Hisham Shaharin and Siti Aishah Shaik Ismail. PAS election director Dr Hatta Ramli and its Pahang PAS commissioner Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man were also present in solidarity with the movement.

In his speech, Anwar hit out at calls by UMNO leaders to accept the election results.

“We won the general election, and you stole this victory. UMNO tells us to accept the results. Which results? The stolen results?

“Do we accept people who robbed you of your car, property, land, and you tell us to accept?” asked Anwar.

The fifth rally is due to be held in Johor Baharu tomorrow.

Earlier this week, PR launched a probe into allegations of fraud involving 27 parliamentary seats won by BN.

Black to the future

Posted: 14 May 2013 08:26 PM PDT

Malaysiakini

The huge and continuing black rallies against BN's theft of the 13th general election are a brilliant sign of Malaysians' undying determination to emerge from the dark ages imposed on them by this dim and shady regime.

And the fact that the forces of darkness are fighting back with the same fly-by-night tactics for which the people have come to so loathe them is only serving to make prospects of the new dawn brighter.

Faced with election results rejecting of his fraudulent 1Malaysia as nothing but UnMalaysia, UnPrime Minister Najib Abdul Razak immediately started making dark accusations against Chinese Malaysians.

How people comprising little more than 20 percent of the population could be responsible for a 53 percent vote against Najib's corrupt and criminal government he didn't and of course couldn't say.

But his cry has been taken up by the regime's murky media, most notably Utusan Malaysia with its headline 'What more do the Chinese want?'

And now Utusan and another BN partner-in-grime, Berita Harian, have taken to supporting Najib in his attempt to darken the mood of Malays against the Chinese as well as against the black rallies protesting his electoral fraud.

Utusan has headlined claims that 'Young Chinese monopolise illegal rallies' and 'DAP continues to trigger provocation'.

Berita Harian
has pulled out all the stops with a 12-page 'report' alleging violence at the rallies by means of pictures taken long ago at a Bersih demonstration.

Berita Harian has focused less on demonising the Chinese and more on smearing the name of Anwar Ibrahim, alleging 'he continues to be the mastermind of street demonstrations in this country', and adding that 'the rakyat is fed [sic] with all kinds of sedition and slander through social media to give a negative picture about the general election'.

Blackest record

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. What the rakyat, or at least the majority, are actually sick of is the kind of sedition and slander with which Berita HarianUtusan and all the rest of BN's mainstream media have been poisoning the people's minds all these years.

azlanIn fact, of all BN's accomplices in its betrayal of the rakyat during all the dark and dreary decades of its rule, the 'mainstream' media arguably have the blackest record.

The sole purpose of news organisations, after all, is to be 'watchdogs' to warn and guard the people against crimes and injustices committed against them by their institutions of government.

But instead, pleading the provisions of BN's pernicious, anti-constitutional Printing Presses and Publications Act, the mainstream media and the thousands of fake editors and journalists who infest them have been nothing but regime stooges.

They have been systematically keeping silent on BN crimes, corruptions and deceptions, and stridently attacking regime critics and opponents with steady streams of lies.

This monstrous betrayal of the people has been equalled, if possible, only by a judiciary so regime-compliant that the people not only have no watchdog, but no legal protection against such atrocities as the rigged recent election.

Yet, according to Malaysiakini, former Court of Appeal Judge Mohd Noor Abdullah has had the arrogance to join in Najib's racist blame-game for his losing campaign with the assertion that "Chinese Malaysians must be prepared for a backlash from the Malay community for their "betrayal" in the general election.

"For the Malays, the pantang larang (taboo) is to be betrayed," he declared, "because when they are betrayed, they will react, and when they react, their dendam kesumat tidak tersudah-sudah(wrath will be endless)."

This racist rant brings us back to the black rallies, which are the most promising sign in living memory that not just Malays but Malaysians of all races are enraged at being betrayed by BN, and that their wrath against the regime will indeed be endless.

Indelible contribution

The endlessly opportunistic Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin seems dimly aware of this, and is desperately trying to present himself as good cop in contrast with other BN operatives' bad cops.

According to Bernama, BN's lead rakyat-betraying 'news' agency, he said in 'Hello Malaysia' on Bernama TV that BN must conduct an in-depth study and analysis on its "trust deficit" if it wants to restore voter trust and confidence within the next five years.

"For instance, the issue about Bangladeshi voters, the blackout during vote-counting in Bentong, ballot boxes brought in suddenly…these must be explained quickly," he said.

Of course Khairy (left) failed to mention a great many other irregularities that also urgently call for 'explanation', like the electoral commission's collusion with BN in massive gerrymandering and roll-stacking, as well as its turning of a blind eye to the regime's wholesale bribery of voters.

"There is no magic pill to redeem our credibility in just one day," he conceded, "but if we are sincere in the transformation and keep our promises, I believe the voters will eventually come to our side. But we have to do it quickly. We have to respond to the allegations fanned by Anwar (Ibrahim)."

As far as I'm concerned, Khairy can talk such pious nonsense as this until he's black in the face, but nothing he or any other BN mouthpiece can say will help the regime.

Because far from just Anwar fanning allegations, it's a fact that most Malaysians have made their own minds up that they're no longer prepared to tolerate BN's lying and stealing, especially when it comes to stealing elections.

Several major inquiries have been instigated into the fraudulent conduct of the recent election, and more grassroots organisations than ever before in Malaysian history, not to mention countless individuals, are on a mission to rid the nation of the criminal curse of BN.

NONEThe latest such initiative I've seen in this cause is my old friend Zunar's launching of the Cartoonists Against Election Fraud movement.

This is not just an array of great talent, but a roll-call of names that totally gives the lie to any assertion that the Chinese are in the forefront of opposition to BN: Nor Azlin Ngah, Johnny Ong, Amir Hakim, Lawrence Jeyarj, Abdullah Jones, Amier Hamzah Hashim, Azhar Saad, Azlan Isa, Sham Saimum Ezil, Megat, Firdaus and Baba.

What an indelible contribution this team will make compared with BN with all its double-talk, delible ink and dubious 'news' media. Just as hundreds of thousands of their fellow citizens decked-out in black will continue to signal the continuing doom of the BN regime, and the coming dawn of a brilliant new era for their beloved Malaysia.
