Umcedel: Pembangkang sedia hadapi PRU-13

NGO wants Vell Paari for Teluk Kemang

The NGO believes that Vell Paari is the right man for the job as opposed to S Murugesan or S Sothinathan.
PETALING JAYA: A local Indian-based NGO wants Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to pick S Vell Paari, MIC's strategy director and son of former president S Samy Vellu, as the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Teluk Kemang parliamentary seat.

Persatuan Belia Pemangkin Bangsa dan Negara Port Dickson chairman K Ravindran said instead of choosing between MIC secretary-general S Murugesan and former vice-president S Sothinathan, Teluk Kemang voters "would prefer" Vell Paari.
"Vell Paari is more vibrant and outspoken. He also has strong influence in getting things done. It is better for him to contest in Teluk Kemang instead of the other two," he told FMT today.
Sothinathan became the Teluk Kemang MP following a by-election in 2000. He retained the seat in the 2004 general election but lost the constituency in the 2008 polls.
Murugesan on the other hand contested the Subang parliamentary constituency in 2008 and lost.
Ravindran said Vell Paari had a better chance of winning back the seat especially since PKR would contest the seat on the opposition front.
Incumbent PKR man Kamarul Baharin Abbas is expected to contest the seat for the second term at the forthcoming general election.
Sothinathan has been keeping a low profile since his defeat. Sources said he has been quietly serving the constituency.
"Since he lost in the general election he has been missing. But now out of nowhere he appears just before the election. We do not want these kind of people who have lost their respective seats, and also credibility," he added.
On Murugesan, Ravindran said voters were not keen in having the MIC secretary-general as the Teluk Kemang member of parliament.
"Murugesan and his team, should concentrate in Subang which his original constituency instead of jumping to a safe seat," he added.
Meanwhile, Vell Paari declined to contest the seat.
"First and foremost I thank those who want me to stand but I have made it clear in early 2011 that I have turned down the offer to run as a MP, for I believe being independent of this position will give me the freedom to voice and effect changes within MIC and BN.
"And to those who keep advising that I should join Pakatan Rakyat, I must say I am a BN member and will always remain as one.
"If there are issues within my house, it's my duty to fix it and not burn my house down. I believe dissent is not disloyalty," he said.

Kah Kiat now in PKR camp?

If rumours are any indication, the end is near for Liberal Democratic Party – Sabah BN's local Chinese arm.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah political grapevine is abuzz with rumours that former Sabah chief minister and ex-Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Chong Kah Kiat has joined PKR.
Word is that Chong, along with two other eminent former state Barisan Nasional assemblymen, joined opposition PKR in a secret meeting with PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim who was here last week.
Chong, who was once a federal minister, was also the former assemblyman for Tanjung Kapur.
The other two are Yapin Gimpoton who once held Kadamaian and Ahmadshah Tambakau, a former Bingkor representative. Ahmadshah, a ex-federal deputy minister, was also once Keningau MP.
According to insiders who claimed knowledge, all three met Anwar at a hotel here during his visit to Sabah on the eve of the Chinese New Year.
The sources claimed they handed in their application forms to Anwar at the meeting and that an announcement on it was being planned by the party's headquarters possibly to coincide with the impending dissolution of Parliament that could be as early as Feb 22.
Efforts to reach Sabah PKR officials for confirmation were futile while texts sent to PKR leaders were ignored.
Meanwhile, it was learnt in Kota Belud that Gimpoton has been earmarked as potential PKR candidate for the Kota Belud parliamentary seat.
According to insiders, Ahmadshah could be a PKR candidate for one of the state seats in Keningau area, possibly Bingkor, which is also being eyed by State Reform Party (STAR) Sabah chairman, Jeffrey Kitingan.
Observers said that if the trio had indeed joined the opposition party, it would boost PKR's image in the state.
It will also further stiffen the fight among the opposition political parties contesting in Sabah, notably between STAR, PKR and also SAPP (Sabah Progressive Party).
Chong has been at odds with the current Barisan Nasional state government over differences on issues close to his heart.
In fact, he resigned his deputy chief minister's post not so long ago, citing his unhappiness with the way things were going on in the state administration.
Chong was especially disappointed at the way Chief Minister Musa Aman handled his "Mazu" statue project in his hometown of Kudat. He even sued Musa over the matter.
In Kota Belud, relatives of Gimpoton claimed that he was persuaded by his own conviction that it is time to change BN. He is known to have his own mind over Sabah politics and in the recent past he openly supported PKR candidate for Kadamaian, Lukia Indan, in 2008.
Ahmadshah, who is the youngest of the trio, is said to be making a comeback after the opposition made inroads into the vastly rural Keningau, where he comes from.
Efforts to reach the three for comments were unsuccessful.

Umno, MCA in fight for Wangsa Maju

Umno and MCA are still jostling over the Wangsa Maju seat, both claiming they have the right candidate.
PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional is in a quandary as to who to select for the Wangsa Maju parliamentary seat. Both MCA and Umno insist that they should be fielding the candidate.

MCA's Yew Teong Look is seeking to regain the seat for BN after he was defeated by PKR-turned-independent Wee Choo Keong with a marginal 150 votes in 2008.
However, standing in his way is Wangsa Maju BN chairman Mohd Shafei Abdullah from Umno, who claims the majority Malay electorate in the area are in favour of a Malay candidate.
Wangsa Maju is a major township made up of 65,078 voters, of which 53% of them are Malays, 38% Chinese and 9% Indian.
In 2008 general election, Wee won the seat under PKR ticket, garnering 19,637 votes. He pulled out from PKR to become a BN-friendly MP in 2010.
Umno's Kamal Salih and Zulhasnan Rafique had successfully won it for BN in 1995 and in 1999 respectively, whereas MCA only managed to defend the seat for one term between 2004 and 2008.
The other factor in Umno's favour is that Shafei has close ties with Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak as he is the political secretary to the finance minister, who is also Najib.
Local Umno division secretary Rosli Zainan said it was 80% sure that Shafei would be fielded as the BN candidate.
"The general election is only a few weeks away. Najib shouldn't be making any drastic changes. Shafei has been the Wangsa Maju BN chairman since 2009," he said, adding that many local folks had lost faith in Yew.
He said he was told that Najib would seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Wednesday, and dissolve Parliament on Friday.
However, Yew said he stood a better chance of regaining the seat from the opposition.
"We are confident that if we are given a chance to contest, we can win it. But on the Umno side, I have no comment," he said.
Yew also said a survey also shows that the party will fare well especially among the Chinese voters.
Though both Yew and Shafei have pledged to abide by Najib's decision on the candidate, it remains to be seen if the divided BN machinery would be able to join force within a short span of time to face a strong opposition challenge.
While it is not certain if Wee would be defending the seat as an independent, PKR has identified former Gerakan man Dr Tan Kee Kwong as its candidate for the seat.

Banyak polis kerjanya bagus, bagus," katanya.
