MEDIA STATEMENT – PKR is concern of SPR revelation that Voters in Sabah is close to a million. Posted: 17 Aug 2012 03:48 AM PDT PKR National Supreme Council Member cum PKR Sabah Secretary Dr Roland Chia is very concern with the recent revelation by Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman, Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar in June 2012 by declaring that Sabah now has 926,638 registered voters. EC went on further that an additional of 258,943 people in Sabah aged 21 and above have not registered as voters.According to Dr Roland Chia -the latest 2010 population census showed that the Sabah population is 3.2 Million which translated that 1 in 3 of the Sabah population is a voter. The 2010 Population and Housing Census, also shows 27.7 per cent out of the 3.2 million in Sabah comprised migrant workers with a majority of them being Indonesians. If we were to take that into consideration, then the effective population of Sabah is 2.31 million. Then the situation is even worst that 1 in 2 population in Sabah is a voter. These figures are indeed worrying to all Malaysians especially Sabahans. To add salt into injury, Datuk Wira Wan Ahmad Wan Omar confessed that "The EC regards this as a big number but went on to claim that EC has no power to verify such big numbers and put on the blame on the National Registration Department to verify on the population of Sabah. Many political parties including those political parties from BN has expressed concern over the sudden population growth in the state. In 1970, Sabah had a population of 653,604 while Sarawak's was 976,269 people. Ten years later in 1980, Sabah's population was 1,307,582 with Sarawak having 1,515,536. In 1991, all of a sudden, Sabah, with a population of 1,736,902 overtook Sarawak's 1,648,217.The puzzling trend continued in 2000 when a census put Sabah's population at 2,449,389 and Sarawak's at only 2,012,616. In 2005, we in the 'Land Below the Wind' were said to have 3,313,000 fellow Sabahans whereas Sarawak was still at the two million bracket with 2,340,000 people," he said. Even a senior BN Malaysian Cabinet minister , pointed out that simple arithmetic shows the Sabah population increased about 285 per cent in 30 years while increase in Sarawak was only about 108 per cent. As of date, despite on the announcement of RCI by the Prime Minister , the terms of reference has yet to be established and is just a election gimmick to pacify the voters. Dr Roland Chia lamented. |
Press Report - Road Traffic Congestion Along Jalan Duta (Bundusan) Making Residents Unhappy Posted: 17 Aug 2012 03:46 AM PDT PKR Sabah has received a lot of complains lately with regards to the traffic congestion and poor road traffic planning along Jalan Duta (Bundusan) Penampang. PKR Sabah Secretary - Dr Roland Chia revealed today. Residents and Business operators have complained on the traffic congestion at the roundabout of the inter link between Jalan Duta (Bundusan Road) and Jalan Penampang Lama. This congestion is worst especially during the rush hours when parents send their children to schools. The schools are SK Bahang, SMK Bahang 1, SRJK Yue Min, SK St Anthony and SMK Taman Tun Fuad and also surrounded by a dense population of residential and industrial areas. The local authorities must quickly look into alternatives to alleviate the problems with the possibility of installing traffic lights instead of roundabouts if the latter does not seemed to solve the traffic congestion. One of the complainants who is a young mother – a resident of Taman Penampang has difficulty using the round about in view of the heavy traffic and also frustrating drivers who drives furiously and in high speed around the roundabout. On many occasions, road traffic accidents occurred and resulted in her unable to send her children to school on time. Such high occurrence of road traffic accidents does not also augur well with the residents living there as it will pose a hazard to the surrounding areas. |
MEDIA RELEASE - DBKK MARKET in KAPAYAN 88 MARKET PLACE STILL ABANDONED –PKR SABAH Posted: 17 Aug 2012 03:39 AM PDT PKR Sabah Secretary – Dr Roland Chia expressed mixed feelings over the preferential treatment in developing markets in Kota Kinabalu & Penampang. Whilst the Kota Kinabalu Central market was given major facelifts, the 88 Market Place in Kapayan and the Penampang Donggongon Wet Market has yet to see any news on their completion and operational date. Many potential hawkers are deprived in operating due to this prolonged situation in addition to the potential economic downturn that has already begun globally. Dr Roland Chia was highlighting this when visiting the abandoned market project in 88 Market Place. We need to have more markets to cater for the fast growing population of Kota Kinabalu & Penampang. Kota Kinabalu proper has a population of 452,058 while the larger urban area which includes Penampang district has an estimated population of 651,658. It is the largest urban centre in Borneo and the sixth largest in Malaysia. As compared to zero progress on the Kapayan 88 Market Place Market and the Penampang Donggongon Wet market, the upgrading works at the Central Market food court is almost completed and an additional grant given by the State Government of RM500,000 enabling the city hall to carry out the upgrading works on the food court area involving 96 food stalls and also the second phase, on the food court catering to both Muslims and non-Muslims involving 36 lots, located near the Segama overhead bridge was completed in May this year. Dr Roland Chia urged the authorities to have Kapayan 88 Market Place and Penampang Donggongon Wet Market solved immediately. |
