12 jam tunggu masuk wad di Hospital, apa dah jadi?

Posted: 15 Jun 2011 01:59 AM PDT

UMMC IN CRISIS
UNIVERSITI MALAYA'S VENERABLE HOSPITAL IN VULNERABLE STATE

Malay Mail Tuesday, June

PETALING JAYA: TWELVE hours – that's how long some patients have to wait to be warded at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).

Currently, there are 1,126 beds available at the hospital but only 925 can be used because there are not enough nurses to man operations at full capacity.

"We can't simply add more beds without a corresponding increase in our staff nurses. At the moment, we have 1,600 permanent staff nurses but we need another 400 more," UMMC director Datuk Dr Ikram Shah told The Paper That Cares.

One such patient was S. Selvanayagam, 59, who said he had to wait till 8.30pm just to be given a bed. "I was supposed to undergo surgery the next morning and I was here since 8.15am.

Another 69-year-old woman who had been scheduled for heart surgery expressed surprise that she was not given priority. Her son, identifying himself only as Razak, claimed to have been told by the staff nurse that his mother would have to wait at the hospital for an available bed or come back later in the evening.

Last February, we reported that both patients and visitors of the hospital faced problems as have to park indiscriminately outside the hospital, causing massive traffic congestion and inciting the wrath of the Petaling Jaya City Council.

On March 7, we reported a story about a visitor who wanted to visit a relative warded in UMMC but being unable to park his car within hospital grounds, he was forced to turn back and come in a taxi instead.

Syarikat di Malaysia diarah tutup akibat kebocoran radioaktif

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 09:29 PM PDT

Company with radiation leak sealed

KUALA LUMPUR: A radiopharmaceutical company in Selangor has been ordered to stop operation and its premises sealed for investigations after radioactive materials were detected on four of its workers.

The order came from the Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB), said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili in a press statement yesterday.

He added that the radioactive contamination was detected by AELB through a Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) system at 11.30am on June 2 after the four workers went to the AELB office.

"The radiation reading on one of the workers exceeded more than 400 times the normal reading (the normal reading is 0.5 micro Sievert/hour)," he said in a press statement here yesterday.

He also said the four workers had gone through the decontamination process with three of them at the National Radiological Emergency Centre at the AELB head office in Dengkil.

The other worker, who was directly involved with the radiopharmaceutical leakage, was decontaminated at the Malaysian Nuclear Agency, he added.

Ongkili said an AELB team also monitored the company premises on the same day and found the contamination there at more than 100 times the normal reading.

"The contaminated area has been cordoned off to ensure the radiation does not spread and to prevent radioactive particles from leaving the place," he said.

The company was also ordered to review its work procedure and to submit remedial action to prevent the incident from happening again. - Bernama

Sex education at camps

National Service trainees to also learn about pregnancy, family life

KANGAR: Some 30,000 National Service trainees in 82 camps will be introduced to Reproductive and Social Health Education as a sub-module starting today to equip them with a better understanding of the social problems facing young people.

National Service Training Department director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil said yesterday the introduction of the sub-module with the syllabus compiled by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, was important as youth were facing many problems and social issues, including rape, pregnancy and baby-dumping.

He said the sub-module had four major sections on gender understanding, family life, skills development and social problems.

They were intended to strengthen the minds of the trainees, and at the same time, enable them to think and act positively when facing or dealing with such issues.

Hadi said adjustments to the sub-module would be made from time to time, depending on the current issues.

"The syl labus has to be improved as we cannot use the old approach to teach the new generation because the problems faced by today's youth are different from those in 2004." He was speaking after the presentation of the 2010 Northern Zone Excellent Service awards and the launching of a book Rahsia Seorang Negarawan (The Secret of a Statesman) at the Tasoh National Service Training Camp, near here, yesterday.

Hadi said 1,600 trainers had undergone training with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry on the submodule and were fully equipped to conduct sessions with the 30,000 trainees, in the second intake for this year, from May 15 to July 30.
