Press Release

‘Hijrah’ in Palestine-Israel Diplomacy

The lost of 41 innocent lives in Israel's worst forest fire in its history that started five days ago in the Carmel mountains outside the northern city of Haifa is indeed a sad human tragedy.

The raging fire has thus far destroyed more than five million trees and 12,000 acres of land while displacing 17,000 residents with losses estimated to be more than USD74 million (RM222 million).

The international community spared no effort to offer humanitarian assistance to the Israeli government and the people of Israel to grapple with the crisis.

Even Palestinian firefighters put aside historical and political differences with their nemisis to join international effort from the US, Russia, Greece and Turkey in controlling the spread of the environmental disaster.

Such move albeit small can indeed open a new vista in the 63-year Palestinian-Israeli conflict that has claimed thousands of lives on both sides of the political divide and untold damages to property and misery to both populations.

It is time for the international community especially Malaysia who have long supported the just cause of the Palestianian people for a state of their own to find a permanent, amicable, win win solution to this unending conflict.

What better opportunity to seize than the time of such crisis that brings together both the Palestianians and Israels as brothers that not only share the same line  of  Abrahamic faith, blood relations and cultural background but also the same desire to live in peace and harmony, side by side.

History has countless examples, the most prominent being the help offered by the Ansars in Medina to the Muhajireen lead by the Holy Prophet (pbuh) in their flight of what is known as 'Hijrah' from Mecca to escape the oppression of their fellow  Arab brethren.

The Ansars including the Jewish community of Medina  welcomed the Holy Prophet (pbuh) in the spirit of brotherhood and not only offered shelter and food but defended their guests from deadly threats from the Meccans.

It is in this same spirit that the Palestianian-Israel conflict can be unravelled and bring to a peaceful end.

As a first step, I strongly urge the members of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) to immediately dispatch rescue teams and other humanitarian aid to the affected area.

OIC's  goodwill and stature will certainly be greatly enhanced in the global community and its standing in future negotiations in the peace process will be respected and considered by their Israeli counterpart.

On the auspicious occasion of the Muslim's new year, I wish to call upon my Muslims brothers and sisters throughout the world to lend their moral and material support to their brothers-in-humanity in their time of need.
