KES CURI GETAH SEKERAP SEMAKIN BERLELUASA
Thursday, December 30, 2010

RISE IN RUBBER THEFTS
NST 2010/12/30

PADANG TERAP: About 700 settlers in Felda Lubuk Merbau here are thankful for the surge in the price of rubber.

Earlier this month, the price of the commodity rose to between RM6.80 and RM7.20 per kg compared with RM5.30 and RM5.50 per kg previously.

The good news, however, came with one unexpected problem which is the rising theft of coagulated rubber.

One victim who had rubber stolen from his plantation was Mohamad Hassan, 58.

"The thieves would steal it in small quantities.

"They came when there was no one at the plantation and took 70kg.

"I learned that some of my friends were also facing this problem."

Another victim, Mohamed Ali, 58, said thieves took 100kg of rubber from his plantation last month.

"I immediately lodged a report with the Lubuk Merbau Felda management.

"Some of my friends are also facing similar problems," he said, adding that most cases were not reported as they involved only a small quantity of rubber.

Following the rise in rubber-related thefts, the Tekai Kiri People's Volunteer Corps has deployed 200 volunteers to tackle the problem.

"We will go round the estate to catch the thieves," its chief, Md Sani Bakar, said.

Lubuk Merbau Felda manager Abdul Sukor Jalaludin said he was aware of the problem.

"I was told by the settlers and the management has already taken preventive measures.

"Besides requesting help from Rela, we have also informed the police to patrol the estate."
