‘EC can’t dismiss ballot-paper buying claim’ Posted: 04 Jun 2013 11:50 PM PDT Malaysiakini The Election Commission (EC) cannot simply say that it has nothing to do with the police report lodged by its officers, alleging the buying of ballot papers by a BN candidate, said PKR’s Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli. He told reporters this is because the EC is constitutionally duty-bound to safeguard its reputation and the credibility of the electoral process. “(EC deputy chairperson) Wan Ahmad (Wan Omar) likes to scold us and then, when a police report is lodged, he goes into quiet mode," Rafizi(centre in photo) told a press conference today. “This is his responsibility. If a report was made by the EC’s own officers, then it is his constitutional duty to clear the air, explain and to nullify the election (results) if it is true." He also rubbished a claim by the BN's Hulu Besut representative Nawi Mohamad that he is not involved. “(Nawi) only said ‘there is no such thing’, as easy as that, which is the standard Umno answer. “They are saying a police report is not evidence enough and that anyone can lodge one, not realising that there are penalties for false reports." Rafizi said the fact that the EC officer was willing to put herself forward to be investigated and to give evidence lends credence to her claim. "But at least Nawi is nicer than Shahrizat," he said, referring to former Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil who has sued him for allegedly defaming her over the National Feedlot Corporation exposes. Nawi had told KiniTV he did not buy any postal ballot paper, while Wan Ahmad told Sinar Harian that the claim has nothing to do with the EC. Yesterday, Rafizi provided media with a copy of a police report lodged by an individual claiming to be an EC officer. The individual said that her postal ballot paper was "bought" by Nawi for RM100, and when she asked for the paper back, the ballot was already marked for BN.

KL ‘Black 505′: Pakatan wants Dataran Merdeka but … Posted: 04 Jun 2013 11:49 PM PDT Malaysiakini Pakatan Rakyat will write to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the police today to state their intention to hold the Kuala Lumpur legof the 'Black 505′ rally at Padang Merbok on June 15. PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli said, however, the coalition's first choice for the 2pm rally would be the iconic Dataran Merdeka, about a kilometre away. “Our wish and intention is to hold the rally at Dataran, but we take heed of the constant reminders by the police to avoid Dataran," he told a press conference today. “In a mutually beneficial move, we take this initiative. But if the police and DBKL do not mind, we would like to assemble at Dataran." He said Pakatan is choosing Padang Merbok for now to avoid going “back and forth” in negotiations, which could lead to delay. The Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 requires that authorities be informed 10 days in advance of any gathering, and that written permission is obtained from venue owners. Padang Merbok is managed by DBKL. Rafizi reiterated that the rally is to demand the resignation of the Election Commission, as well as reinstatement of an interim panel that is agreed upon by the BN, Pakatan and civil society groups like Bersih to spearhead electoral reform. “The time when the BN decides on its own is over. We can discuss terms of reference for the appointment of a new EC, but (there will be) no compromise unless all members resign immediately,” he said. He said the rally will also demand that a re-election be called in 30 parliamentary constituencies, under the watch of the proposed interim EC. It will further demand that amendments to electoral laws and the intended redelineation exercise is halted until the interim panel is in place. “We are apprehensive about (Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s) announcement that the EC will be under a parliamentary select committee (PSC), as this is nothing but a delay tactic. “We have been down this path (before) … the PSC is made of a majority of BN members, and there will be delays, and further delays." ‘PAS leaders, members will be there’ Also at the press conference was PAS deputy secretary-general Syed Azman Syed Nawawi, who refuted claims that the party is not behind the 'Black 505′ rallies nationwide. He said that the entire PAS top leadership will be present at the KL rally and that the party will mobilise members and supporters to attend as well. PKR’s Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul said the event will take on a “festive” mood and will “safe and non-confrontational” just like the many 'Black 505′ rallies held since May 8. “There have been many young people who come in a respectful and orderly manner, and this is encouraging as it shows that the nation is maturing fast,” he said. Prior to the Kuala Lumpur event, Black 505 rallies will be held in Perlis on June 10, in Sungai Petani, Kedah, on June 11 and in Batu Pahat, Johor, on June 14. “We are inviting everyone, whether party members or not and including BN members, to come and listen as this is part of political education,” he added.

Malaysia: Drop Charges Against ‘Blackout 505’ Posted: 04 Jun 2013 11:23 PM PDT Human Rights Watch The Malaysian authorities should stop prosecuting activists and opposition figures involved in rallies protesting the recent elections, Human Rights Watch said in a letter to Prime Minister Najib Razak. At least six alleged organizers of the "Blackout 505" rallies have been charged with violating Malaysia's Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for failing to give police the required 10-day advance notification. On May 22, police also arrested 18 peaceful protesters at a candlelight vigil outside the Jinjang police station in Kuala Lumpur. "Prosecuting activists for organizing peaceful protests makes a mockery of the prime minister's promises to establish a rights-respecting government in Malaysia," said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director. "The government should drop the charges against the six activists and publicly pledge to cease bringing cases against organizers of peaceful protests." The "Blackout 505" rallies in Selangor, Penang, Ipoh, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Johor Bahru, and other parts of Malaysia attracted large numbers protesting the results of, and alleged malfeasance during, the country's May general elections. The well-ordered demonstrations have generally been confined to clearly defined spaces or venues, such as sports stadiums and empty fields. Statements by prominent public officials called into question the government's commitment to protect the right to peaceful assembly. For example, Minister of Home Affairs Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told the media that people had to stop the post-election gatherings, and "if they still want to continue, then they will have to pay the price." Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Mohmad Salleh said the police refused to tolerate the candlelight vigil, "as it will only cause agitation among the public." The 10-day notice provision under the Peaceful Assembly Act is contrary to international human rights standards and should be amended along with other problematic parts of the law to protect public assembly and free expression. The United Nations special rapporteur on freedom of assembly and of association, Maina Kai, reported to the UN Human Rights Council in April 2013 that "peaceful protests should not be viewed as a threat" by governments. He flagged lengthy notification periods and recommended a maximum notice requirement of 48 hours. Human Rights Watch called on the Malaysian authorities to drop the charges against the "Blackout 505" protest organizers, and to end harassment and police investigations of other organizers. The Malaysian government should amend the Peaceful Assembly Act and other laws that infringe on the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of association. "Prime Minister Najib should understand that addressing the issues surrounding the May elections means listening to his opponents – not prosecuting them for asserting the right to have their voices heard," Robertson said.

Program tersebut menyediakan modul-modul untuk melatih dan memberi pendedahan kepada mahasiswa mengenai ilmu dan pengalaman politik, pembangunan dasar, daya kepimpinan serta etika media. "Program ini berbeza dengan program-program sedia ada yang selalunya memerlukan mahasiswa menjalankan tugas berkaitan urusan pejabat. "KEIP juga mengambil model yang digunakan parti-parti politik ternama dunia seperti Parti Demokrat," jelas Izzah pada sidang media pelancaran KEIP di ibu pejabat parti hari ini. Menurut Izzah, KEIP dikhususkan kepada mahasiswa pelbagai latar belakang pendidikan yang berminat mengenai politik dan mereka akan ditempatkan mengikut kawasan Parlimen yang akan ditetapkan. Katanya, di akhir program, setiap kumpulan pelatih akan mengusahakan satu projek yang meliputi aspek politik, ekonomi dan sosial termasuk penganjuran program politik dan pembangunan dasar untuk KEADILAN sendiri. BN Man Bought Ballots for RM100 Each Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:30 AM PDT PETALING JAYA: A police report has been made against a BN assemblyman for allegedly bribing 25 election officers in return for their postal votes, which he purportedly used to mark for himself. This report was lodged by an election officer last Wednesday, PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli claimed today, citing this as further proof the May 5 general election was riddled with fraud. "On April 29, 2013 at around 5.30pm, 24 other election officers who were to be on duty on election day and I were summoned by YB Nawi bin Mohamed, the Hulu Besut candidate…" a copy of the police report reads. "We were ordered by YB Nawi to submit our unmarked postal votes [to] Hjh Azizah Ibrahim…and afterwards we were paid RM100 each." According to the report, the election officer and three others asked for their ballot papers the following day, out of guilt over what she felt was a violation of the Elections Act. "Once our ballot papers were returned to us, I found that the ballot papers had been marked, without our consent or knowledge," she wrote in the report. She added that when she cast her ballot, the officers did not mark her finger with indelible ink. "I'm extremely unsatisfied as my ballot paper was marked without our consent," she said in the report. The name of the complainant was, however, blacked out in the copy of the police report provided to the media. Rafizi, who heads the party's #SiasatPRU13 investigation team, said today it was unlikely this incident of postal vote bribing was an isolated case. "With the postal votes and early votes numbering to over 500,000 across the country, the figure is significant enough to have influenced the results of the general election," said Rafizi at the PKR headquarters here today. "This is why we are firm in believing the general election was not valid and that the results were marred by fraud, and this is why we will continue with the June 15 rally." He added that Pakatan intended to provide the 10 days' notice of the rally, tomorrow, in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2010. Lebih 50,000 Undi ‘Hilang’ di Seluruh Negara, Pengundi Lapor Polis Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:00 AM PDT PETALING JAYA, 3 JUN: Seorang pengundi, Mohd Azlan Mohd Sharif membuat enam laporan polis menuntut siasatan berhubung keputusan pilihan raya umum ke-13 yang digazetkan 22 Mei lalu berbeza dengan yang diumum pegawai pengurus Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) melalui borang 16. Beliau mendapati sebanyak 53,045 kertas undi 'hilang' melibatkan semua kerusi Parlimen dan DUN seluruh negara kecuali DUN Sungai Acheh, Pulau Pinang, DUN Banggi dan DUN Labuk, Sabah. Borang 16 ialah Borang Pengisytiharan Keputusan pilihan raya daripada 222 kawasan Parlimen dan 505 kawasan Dewan Undangan Negeri di seluruh negara. "Ia satu kesalahan jenayah mengikut seksyen 3(1)(h) dan seksyen 6 (2) Akta Kesalahan Pilihan Raya 1954. "Maka jelas polis dan SPR yang bertugas pada hari, masa dan tempat mengundi bersubahat, membenarkan dan melakukan jenayah ini," katanya dipetik dalam laporan polisnya yang pertama. Mohd Azlan, pengundi DUN Sungai Balang dan parlimen Muar, Johor membuat semua laporan itu di balai polis Klang pada 30 Mei. Enam laporan melibatkan kehilangan kertas undi, salah kira undi, maklumat yang sudah berubah, perbezaan kertas undi yang dikeluar di parlimen dan DUN, maklumat kerusi parlimen dan DUN berbeza sebelum dan selepas diwartakan dan kecuaian anggota polis. "Saya tidak nampak, tidak tahu, tidak terdengar, tidak terbaca apa-apa berita mengatakan ada tangkapan oleh SPR atau polis terhadap mana-mana pihak yang membawa keluar atau menghilangkan kertas undi yang telah dikeluarkan," kata Azlan. Katanya. kemenangan semua calon bagi setiap kerusi itu pada PRU lalu adalah tidak sah dan terbatal sehinggalah kertas undi itu disemak dan disahkan semula. "Tujuan enam laporan dibuat agar pihak berkuasa termasuk polis menyiasatnya. Sebagai rakyat Malaysia, saya menjunjung semangat Perlembagaan dan Rukun Negara khususnya Keluhuran dan Kedaulatan Undang-undang. Dalam laporan polisnya yang keenam, beliau mendesak Ketua Polis Negara, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar mengambil tindakan tegas terhadap pegawainya yang cuai menjalankan tugas pada PRU lalu. PKR stands by phantom voters claims, blames EC for xenophobia Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:20 AM PDT The Malaysian Insider PKR has stood by its allegations that foreign nationals of Bangladesh origin had voted illegally in Election 2013 despite the denial made by the country's High Commissioner here yesterday, insisting that it has proof to back its claims. The Pakatan Rakyat (PR) party added that the Election Commission (EC) should also take full responsibility for the hostilities shown towards Bangladeshi migrant workers since its failure to deal with complaints of phantom voters had strengthened accusations that the government had won the May 5 polls through fraud. "We accept their statement, that is their right but you have to ask this question: if majority of our people have been talking about it for a long time, I don't think your normal Malaysians would go and create news out of nothing and more importantly the integrity of an election is sacred and so important to our country.  "The way I look at it is that if there are any allegations about phantom voters whether they are Bangladeshis, Indonesians, Filipinos… what is more important is the authorities and the parties responsible for it which is the EC must take it seriously and investigate fully. "But they have refused to probe so it strengthens the perception that there are phantom voters from overseas," PKR strategic director told a press conference at the party's headquarters here. Yesterday, the government of Bangladesh denied allegations that its Malaysian-based workers had acted as phantom voters in Election 2013, adding that the "xenophobic" accusation has subjected its citizens to abuse. The country's High Commissioner to Malaysia Atiqur Rahman also laughed off claims that 40,000 of Bangladeshi citizens had been transported into Malaysia to vote for the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) a week before the May 5 polls. He further described the allegations as "propaganda" and "political manipulation" that might put innocent Bangladeshis under increased threat and, at the same time, impose a negative image of its country unfairly. PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said although the party conceded it was wrong to target Bangladeshi migrant workers, the EC could have done its part to prevent the xenophobic reaction towards foreign nationals if it had acted on the complaints. "Of course, the attacks and hostilities should not be brought against the foreigner, the EC should have prevented this. We are not asking the public to hate and so on but we must not let this incident to become something that we easily forget. "You have to push and demand that EC and relevant conduct investigations most professionally," she told the same press conference. PR leaders have accused the ruling coalition of rigging the Election 2013 results through fraudulent practices that included transporting foreign nationals into key states in Malaysia to vote for Barisan Nasional (BN). BN leaders, however, described the allegation as baseless and said the opposition has yet to show any concrete evidence to support its claims. Despite a resurgent opposition, BN clung on to power by winning 133 seats against PR's 88, although this was seven fewer than what it garnered in 2008. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's coalition also lost the popular vote for the first time since 1969. PR and electoral reform group Bersih are now planning to file election petitions to challenge some results from the May 5 polls, claiming to have strong evidence of fraud in what had been Malaysia's closest election to date. Among the evidence compiled are videos that purportedly showed foreign nationals being flown in a day before the election. Najib had recently announced that his government would see through its plans to reform the electoral system by placing the Election Commission (EC) under a special parliamentary committee. PR leaders, however, claimed the move was more of a public relations exercise and called for the resignation of the commission's leadership as the first condition towards genuine polls reform.

Bersih will back KL ‘Black 505′ if it urges EC to resign Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:15 AM PDT Malaysiakini Bersih co-chairperson S Ambiga said that the electoral reform pressure group will support the 'Black 505' rally held by Pakatan Rakyat in Kuala Lumpur should it aim to urge the Election Commission (EC) to resign. Ambiga said that Bersih has yet to get know the aims of the rally, which will be held on June 15. "We don't know, we believe one of the aims as they said earlier is to ask the EC to resign. If that's the case, we will support such a move because we think the EC should resign," she told the press after Bersih failed to meet Immigration Department director-general Alias Ahmad this morning. Ambiga also stressed that Bersih maintains its stand that everyone has the constitutional right to hold a rally. PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim announced yesterday that Pakatan will hold this rally in Kuala Lumpur on June 15 to protest alleged electoral fraud in the 13th general election that was held on May 5. Asked if the rally would be held in a stadium or whether it would be a street demonstration, he said the rally secretariat would furnish details in due course. This is to continue a series of protests around the country against alleged electoral fraud dubbed 'Black 505′, which began in Kelana Jaya, Selangor, on May 8. Bersih previously had held two massive rallies in downtown Kuala Lumpur to urge electoral reform prior to the 13th general election.

‘Ballot papers of EC officers sold to BN for RM100 each’ Posted: 04 Jun 2013 02:13 AM PDT Malaysiakini A BN state seat candidate has been accused of “buying” ballot papers from Election Commission (EC) officers in order to vote on behalf of them to ensure victory for BN. In exposing this today, PKR strategy director Rafizi Ramli said one of the officers had on May 4, just a day before the 13th general election, lodged a police report on this. Copies of the police report were given to members of the media by Rafizi during a press conference at PKR headquarters at Tropicana in Petaling Jaya this afternoon. The report details how the EC officers were called up by the BN candidate before they passed their ballot papers to BN coalition workers. According to Rafizi, four of the EC officers demanded back their ballot papers a day after they were sold to the BN candidate for RM100 each. “However, when they got back their ballot papers, they found that their ballots had already been been marked,” Rafizi said The police report names the BN candidate. Malaysiakini is withholding his name until he responds to our queries.

Pengarah Kesihatan Negeri Pahang, Dr. Norhizan Ismail berkata, seramai 112 penghidap penyakit itu meninggal dunia tahun lepas berpunca daripada batuk berpanjangan dan pelbagai faktor termasuk penularan jangkitan kuman HIV. Beliau berkata, penghidap HIV berisiko tinggi menghidap tibi selain punca diabetes, buah pinggang dan penyakit berjangkit. "Tibi perlu dikawal kerana boleh merebak melalui ahli keluarga dan orang sekitar jika penyakit itu tidak dikawal dari awal," katanya ketika merasmikan Hari Tibi Sedunia peringkat Negeri Pahang di Felda Lakum semalam. Norhizan berkata, berdasarkan laporan Pertubuhan Kesihatan Sedunia (WHO), seramai 1.4 juta orang meninggal dunia akibat penyakit tibi pada tahun 2011 daripada 8.7 juta kes baharu tibi dikesan pada tahun yang sama. Katanya sejak tahun 2000, Pahang berjaya mencapai kadar pengesanan yang disarankan WHO iaitu sebanyak 70 peratus tetapi saranan itu ditingkatkan kepada 85 peratus pada tahun 2011 dan tahun ini meningkat kepada 95 peratus. - Bernama

Anwar berkata, pihaknya juga akan mengadakan rundingan dengan Ketua Polis Negara Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar bagi tujuan berkenaan. "Kita juga telah memutuskan untuk menyokong inisiatif mengadakan himpunan aman di Kuala Lumpur pada petang 15 Jun akan datang. "Pihak jawatankuasa sekretariat dan wakil-wakil NGO akan meneliti semua aspek dan akan berunding dengan Ketua Polis Negara dan pihak keselamatan supaya perjalanannya itu terjamin aman dan terkawal," kata Anwar ketika sidang media di Ibu Pejabat PKR di sini. Sementara itu, mengulas berkenaan perbincangan mengenai penyertaan wakil pemimpin Pakatan Rakyat (PR) dalam Jawatankuasa Khas Pilihan Parlimen (PSC) mengenai penambah baikan Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) jelas Anwar tidak akan berlaku sehingga pengerusi dan timbalan pengerusi SPR meletakkan jawatan. Ketua Pembangkang itu menegaskan, penubuhan PSC itu adalah cubaan untuk mengalih perhatian penipuan yang dibangkitkan mereka, dan juga tindakan pengerusi SPR, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf dan timbalannya Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar yang tidak kompeten. "Barang rompakan itu serah dulu, baru kita cerita," kata Anwar merujuk kepada penipuan yang berlaku dalam pilihan raya 5 Mei lalu. "SPR perlu letak jawatan, tidak kompeten, jangan cuba menipu lagi seperti kes selepas Bersih, buat PSC, kemudian menipu kami lagi," tegasnya. Sejak pengumuman keputusan Pilihan Raya 2013, PR telah menganjurkan beberapa diri Himpunan "Blackout 505" di seluruh negara menolak keputusan pilihan raya. Lebih 80 Petisyen PRU 13, Pimpinan SPR Didesak Letak Jawatan Posted: 03 Jun 2013 01:45 AM PDT PETALING JAYA, 3 JUN: Pakatan Rakyat hari ini sebulat suara mendesak Pengerusi Suruhanjaya Pilihanraya (SPR), Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof dan Timbalannya, Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar meletakkan jawatan. "Dalam sejarah ada satu atau dua kes pernah difailkan. Tetapi belum pernah sampai 80 hingga 90 kerusi. "Ini saja sudah cukup untuk pengerusi (SPR) dan timbalannya letak jawatan segera," tegas Anwar ketika sidang media hari ini. Lebih 80 petisyen membantah keputusan pilihan raya umum ke-13 merupakan bukti Aziz dan Wan Ahmad cuai serta terlibat dalam kecurangan pilihan raya. Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Najib Razak pada 1 Jun lalu memberitahu media bahawa BN turut memfailkan lebih 50 petisyen membabitkan sekurang-kurangnya 37 kerusi Parlimen dan Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN). Manakala Pakatan Rakyat setakat ini dilaporkan akan mengemuka 35 petisyen dengan 18 daripadanya adalah dari KEADILAN, 14 bagi PAS dan 3 dari DAP. Sementara itu, Setiausaha Agung PAS, Datuk Mustafa Ali menyifatkan bantahan terhadap keputusan PRU-13 dari BN membuktikan kegagalan SPR. "Apabila BN pun failkan petisyen maknanya mereka pun ada yang tak puas hati dengan perjalanan pilihan raya, itu jelas menunjukkan kegagalan SPR menjalankan tanggungjawab mereka," katanya. Pakatan to Form Special Committee on IPCMC Posted: 03 Jun 2013 01:30 AM PDT PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rakyat will set up a special committee to push for the establishment of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) once Parliament convenes on June 24, DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang announced today. The Gelang Patah MP said this in the wake of three deaths in custody in the past 11 days. Describing it as an "outrageous" record, Lim said this proved that the Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission (EAIC) had failed to resolve the issue. "We will set up a committee comprising two members of parliament from each party in Pakatan, and they will be responsible for coming up with the bill to establish the IPCMC. "But we need enough members of parliament to support this. We have 89 MPs from Pakatan, and we need another 23 to obtain a simple majority so that we can set up the IPCMC," he told a press conference here. He appealed to BN parliamentarians to stop thinking along party lines and throw their weight behind the bill, pointing out that it was for the common good of the people. "MIC have said four of their MPS want to see the IPCMC set up, while in MCA, vice-president Gan Ping Sieu said he supported it," Lim said. "So we hope they can prepare a statement of their support within the next two or three weeks. We hope that the MPs do not want deaths in custody to continue happening," he added. Lim vowed that Pakatan would ensure the IPCMC would become its main agenda once parliament convenes next month. Eight people have died in police custody in this year alone. The latest was P Karuna Nithi, 43, who was found unconscious by policemen on duty at around 6.30pm on Saturday in the Tampin police station lock-up. Ironically, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had just one day before Karuna Nithi's death assured that investigations on custodial deaths would be conducted simultaneously by the Bukit Aman police special committee and the EAIC. Zahid also assured investigations would be conducted without fear or favour against police personnel who abused their power. "We would not side the perpetrators," he said in the wake of criticisms against the special committee on custodial deaths. Last Tuesday, Bukit Aman announced the formation of a special committee led by Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar to curb deaths in police lock ups. The committee that is expected to start functioning soon would among others, monitor the safety aspects and health condition of those detained in lock ups. Explain blacklist, Sabah PKR rep tells state BN Posted: 03 Jun 2013 03:15 AM PDT The Malaysian Insider Sabah PKR MP Darell Leiking today demanded the state spell out how long it is barring entry to opposition leaders, saying the information was crucial to help plan future programmes. Specifically referring to the deportation of Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar last Thursday, Leiking questioned if Sabah Deputy Speaker Datuk Johnny Mositun had been accurate when he claimed the ban had just been for a day. "Can I ask Datuk Johnny Mositun on what is that 'threat to the state security' that Nurul Izzah poses to Sabah and can he confirm that she is banned only for that day only? "His verification will be of great help for us to find out and to get bottom of the facts as there are many speculations as to why Nurul was denied entry and deported from Sabah," the Penampang MP said in a statement here.  "Also, a verification from the deputy Speaker of the State assembly on whether the 'ban' is only for one day is also a crucial information as that would assist Nurul on her future programmes in Sabah," he added. Leiking was referring to Mositun's remarks in the Daily Express today where the latter was quoted saying that Nurul Izzah had been barred from entering Sabah last week for just a day and because she was deemed a threat to state security. From the statement, Leiking said it was reasonable to assume that Mositun was privy and aware of the actual reason behind Nurul Izzah's deportation. The deputy PKR secretary-general, however, also asked for confirmation from Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman on whether the ban had been a pre-planned decision by the state Cabinet. Earlier today, The Malaysian Insider reported the contents of a leaked letter from Musa's office to the state's Immigration Department confirming that apart from Nurul Izzah, her father Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and Rafizi Ramli are also on a blacklist barring them from entering the east Malaysian state. The May 21 letter, which sports the letterhead from Musa's office, also says the list was given the Sabah Cabinet's stamp of approval following its first meeting last month on May 15 – 10 days after the 13th general election. "The Cabinet has agreed that the chief minister invoke his absolute powers under the Immigration Act, and in accordance with certification from the Sabah Royal Malaysian Police Special Branch chief, not to land these individuals to Sabah," the letter said, before it listed out the names of the five politicians and Bersih 2.0 co-chairman. According to Sabah DAP chief Jimmy Wong, a reliable source from the Immigration Department had leaked a copy of the first page of the document to him. The document was emailed to The Malaysian Insider this morning. From the single page, the duration of the blacklist or its reason, was not stated. When contacted, Lim described the ban "ridiculous", pointing out that the government was making a mockery of democracy by not only banning its own citizens from entering a state in the country, but legally elected representatives. "Of course this is not my first time… I am probably the most banned leader… I've been banned from Sabah, from Sarawak… but I thought we have passed those days. "It looks like we are still in the thick of it," he complained. Last Thursday, Nurul Izzah was barred from entering Sabah upon arriving in Kota Kinabalu to celebrate Pesta Kaamatan, or the Harvest Festival, in her personal capacity. Explaining the ban on Saturday, Musa was reported saying that those who pose a threat to the Sabah ideals of peace harmony will not be welcomed to the state. He added that state never restricted other opposition leaders before the polls, but believed Nurul Izzah had different intentions this time. "Now that the elections are over, their leader refuses to accept the verdict. It is a case of sour grapes and ungentlemanly conduct. He wants to rile up the masses to rally throughout the country to show his, and I repeat, his discontent," he said. "We have reason to believe that Nurul Izzah's intentions to come to Sabah, this time around, may not be as innocent as she or her fellow opposition members make it out to be," he added.

The Baling spirit lives on Posted: 03 Jun 2013 03:12 AM PDT Malaysiakini Thirty-nine years ago, a little-known incident in Baling caused a seismic shift in Malaysian politics, but very few Malaysians are aware of the incident or realise its significance and the impact it created. If the full details of this incident had been divulged in 1974, the government might have fallen. The Baling incident caused a nightmare for Abdul Razak Hussein, the prime minister at the time. Today, the nightmare is recurring for Najib Abdul Razak, the leader of the current minority government. Najib feels he has no alternative but to instigate several crackdowns on the rakyat. The Baling event referred to is not the historic meeting in 1955 of Tunku Abdul Rahman, who was the head of the Malayan government and Chin Peng, the leader of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM). Nor was it the Memali Incident of 1985, the shameful massacre of a defenceless community by forces loyal to Dr Mahathir Mohamad's government. The Baling Incident (BI) which occurred in 1974 was shrouded in secrecy. It was a series of many small expressions of the bottled-up feelings of anger, betrayal, fear and resentment, of the rural poor. In present-day Malaysia, the rakyat participated in democracy marches and rallies against oppression, injustice and the dictatorial rule of Najib and the BN government. In 1974, it was Abdul Razak, Najib's father, who faced similar marches against social injustices. The root cause of the BI was abject poverty and starvation. The rubber smallholders faced ruin when the global price of rubber plummeted. The farmers could not cope with the rising cost of living and rural families had to forage for food in the jungles. Bizarrely, in 1974 Abdul Razak (right) announced in Parliament that the civil servants' allowance would be increased by 50 percent, from RM1,000 to RM1,500. When news broke of the deaths of a few children from eating ubi gadong, a type of poisonous wild yam, to stave off hunger pangs, the social unrest reached a tipping point. At its peak, around 25,000 of the rural poor took to the streets. Like father, like son; both Abdul Razak and Najib unleashed the might of the FRU and the police on peaceful protesters. Najib is a politician without imagination, but he knew that brutal action had served his father well. A dark chapter in our history In 2013 Najib merely employed his father's tried and tested methods of retaliation. The consequences of 1974 opened a dark chapter in our history. Then, like now, information was heavily censored. Abdul Razak did not want the rakyat to know that an uprising had occurred in Kedah. Five years earlier, the country had been overwhelmed by the May 13 clashes. The Chinese were convenient scapegoats. Abdul Razak was in a quandary. The district of Baling was mainly populated by Malays. The significance of the BI had to be suppressed. In the BI there was no Chinese element, or communist subversives at work. BI was social unrest – a revolt by Malay smallholders and farmers. Peaceful hunger marches throughout Baling spread outwards from Baling town, Kulim and Sik. News travelled fast and despite media censorship in 1974, students at Universiti Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Kolej Mara, as well as the universities' teaching fraternity expressed their support for the uprising. They organised a series of meetings and urged the government to address the plight of the poor. Syed Husin Ali (right), then an associate professor at Universiti Malaya, said: "At first they (the students) demonstrated within their campus. The police fired tear gas but some cannisters landed on the nearby squatter settlement, injuring some children. "The students joined forces and gathered in the centre of KL. When the police acted against them, they took refuge in the National Mosque. Over 1,000 students were arrested and detained for a few days. "Some squatters joined some students to 'run riot' at the highway, putting up blockades and smashing traffic lights." Abdul Razak warned of tough reprisals and over 40 students and lecturers were detained under the ISA. Among them was Anwar Ibrahim, who was detained for two years. Syed Husin said: "I was detained for six years. I was an associate professor and considered recalcitrant for refusing to admit guilt. "I was accused of being pro-communist and the brain behind the demos. They wanted me to serve as an example to create fear among those academic staff to prevent them from following my path. "I think these are the reasons why I was incarcerated up to six years." The education minister then was Mahathir. He and Ungku Aziz, the vice-chancellor of UM at the time, produced the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA). The UUCA has effectively curbed students' freedom and deprived universities of their autonomy. Students and lecturers are fearful of speaking out on issues which are deemed sensitive to BN. Our universities have never recovered from Mahathir's despicable legacy. Abdul Razak, his peers and successors' children were sent abroad for their education, whilst the rest of the rakyat received a stifling Malaysian schooling. Baling not an isolated incident In 2013, history repeated itself and the nightmare which descended on Najib's father is now his own. Today, Najib has warned that he would get tough with students Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Safwan Anang as well as other dissenters. The ISA has been repealed, so what has Najib up his sleeve? Let this column warn both Najib and Mahathir, the joint rulers of Malaysia that their efforts to subjugate the rakyat will not succeed. Baling was not an isolated incident. Prior to BI, there were unreported acts of unrest against the BN government. In Tasik Utara, Johor Baru, poor urban Malays camped in front the residence of then MB Osman Saat to voice their disgust at being cheated of housing and land. In 1974 and in 2013, the Malays opposed the government, but Najib has created a red herring and claimed that in GE13, it was a Chinese tsunami. It is not! It is Malaysians fighting tyranny. The wounds which Abdul Razak, Mahathir and Najib opened are still festering. Our awareness of their crimes and of their despotic rule are more acute. Their policies have cast long shadows and there will be more Baling incidents until Najib and the illegitimate BN government step down.

Anwar: Perubahan didorong anak muda, tangkas padam api perkauman Posted: 03 Jun 2013 03:09 AM PDT Keadilan Daily Kebangkitan anak muda pelbagai bangsa di Malaysia menuntut perubahan sosial, ekonomi dan politik adalah yang terbesar pernah berlaku dalam sejarah negara ini, kata Ketua Umum KEADILAN, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Justeru, percubaan media Umno-BN mencetus sentimen perkauman untuk memecah-belahkan rakyat tidak akan berjaya kerana desakan perubahan lebih kuat didorong golongan muda di Malaysia. "Kemahuan anak muda untuk perubahan sangat tinggi. Lihat di kiri dan kanan kita. Mereka (kerajaan) tidak sedar. Desakan perubahan digerakkan oleh mereka. Majoritinya anak muda. "Makna kebebasan dan wacana sekarang ini ialah tentang kefahaman antara bangsa-bangsa. Ini pilihan pada masa akan datang," kata Anwar dalam program wacana bersama Profesor Dr James Piscatori dari Univesiti Durham di kediamannya semalam. Anwar menceritakan pengalamannya dalam gerakan Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) yang membincangkan isu poltik Islam dan masyarakat Melayu berdepan dengan hujah perkauman dilontarkan Umno-BN ketika itu. "Semenjak saya dari zaman ABIM, kita berhadapan dengan isu kelangsungan politik Melayu-Islam. Ia sebenarnya satu desakan dan isu ini relevan untuk dibahaskan," kata Anwar . Namun, Anwar menegaskan beliau ketika itu tetap mengambil pendirian untuk menentang pendekatan politik perkauman yang diamalkan Umno-BN. Malah katanya, kaedah itu diteruskan oleh rejim yang sama hari ini sebelum dan semasa kempen pilihan raya umum ke-13 berlangsung. Namun, beliau yakin kelompok muda di Malaysia telah memahami sejarah dan menolak agenda sempit yang cuba disebarkan. "Saya bangga dengan anak muda," kata Anwar menegaskan setiap anak muda meskipun dari agama yang berlainan tetap mempunyai peranan dalam agenda perubahan. Anwar merujuk pandangan ahli falsafah Perancis, Alexis de Tocqueville yang menulis di dalam karya 'Revolt of the Masses' bahawa kebangkitan itu itu datangnya daripada rakyat, manakala parti politik hanya sebagai 'kenderaan' untuk membawa tujuan. "Meskipun dalam keadaan media Malaysia yang tidak bebas, kita masih boleh mempertahankan keyakinan kita," katanya.
