Anwar gets much needed treatment at HKL

Posted: 07 Jul 2015 09:01 AM PDT

Jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has been sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for a much needed medical treatment.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said Anwar’s family has been informed on the matter.

“We were made to understand that Anwar will be placed at a separate ward at HKL for a few days.

“He will be treated with intensive physiotherapy for his shoulder, his blood pressure monitored and they will conduct a CT Scan for his kidney,” he said in a statement today.

Fahmi added that Anwar’s wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (photo) was allowed to visit the former deputy premier.

This comes after the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) of MPs from across the globe has called for Anwar to be given the necessary medical treatment.

Last week Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said he was informed on Anwar’s condition and has ordered the relevant parties to act on it.

Anwar is now at Sungai Buloh prison after he was found guilty of sodomy and sentenced to five years in jail in February.

World MPs want proper medical care for Anwar

Posted: 04 Jul 2015 07:02 AM PDT

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) of MPs from across the globe has called for jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to be given the necessary medical treatment.

“Although the three-day IPU mission… acknowledged efforts in addressing Anwar's health problems, it urged authorities to allow follow-up care requested by doctors in early June after he underwent hospital treatment,” the union said in a statement.

IPU’s three-day mission, which included a visit to Anwar in prison, concluded on Wednesday.

The call comes amid concerns about a tumour in Anwar’s kidney.

A day before the IPU concluded its mission, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak also noted Anwar’s condition, urging the relevant authorities to ensure he receives proper medical attention.

“I take note of Anwar’s health and want the relevant authorities to ensure he receives the necessary treatment,” Najib tweeted on Tuesday.

‘Anwar isolated’

The IPU also expressed concern that Anwar is not allowed contact with other prisoners.

In addition, they urged that other charges against other MPs over Anwar’s jailing to be dropped.

“The three-member delegation from IPU's committee on the human rights of parliamentarians also call for the dismissal of charges and investigations against eight opposition MPs, including Anwar's daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar.

“Some of the MPs had taken part in demonstrations, while Nurul Izzah had been briefly arrested after criticising the judiciary during a speech in Parliament,” it said.

It added the IPU delegation is urging Malaysian authorities to ratify and implement all key international human rights treaties.

It will present a full report on the mission to IPU members in October.

Anwar Urges Muslim Democrats to Stay United

Posted: 04 Jul 2015 06:58 AM PDT

PETALING JAYA, July 3, 2015:

Rahimah Abdulrahim, the executive director of the Indonesian Habibie Centre, urged all Muslims around the world to stay united as urged by jailed Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a message.

According to Rahimah, although Anwar was currently in prison, he still tried to provide his input on current issues concerning Muslims.

"Although behind bars, he did send a message through other people for us.

"He told us to keep strengthening Muslim democrats," she said during a preparatory meeting of the second World Forum for Muslim Democrats (WFMD) held at One World Hotel in Bandar Utama here, today.

According to Rahimah, WFMD was the brainchild of Anwar. It serves as a platform for Muslims around the world to discuss current issues concerning Islam.

Executive director of the Institute for Policy Research (IKD) Khalid Jaafar, who was also present during the meeting, said that among the topics that would be discussed during this year's forum were Islamophobia, terrorism, Muslim refugees as well as Muslim minorities living in non-Muslim countries.

Khalid said the upcoming forum would also be used as a platform for them to find a solution on the current Rohingya crisis.

"We will also be discussing about other refugees, too, such as those affected by sectarian wars as well as the political crisis in the Middle East.

The WFMD was held last year for the first time in Malaysia and saw the participation of about 300 delegates from several countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and Turkey.

HEALTH OF MALAYSIA’S ANWAR IBRAHIM DETERIORATING

Posted: 30 Jun 2015 07:06 AM PDT

MEDIA RELEASE June 30, 2015

Legal Team Urges Immediate Transfer to House Arrest or Hospital
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's legal team reports that Anwar's health is deteriorating as a result of not being provided access to treatments required to address his serious health conditions. It is urgent that he be transferred immediately to house arrest where he can be permitted to visit his own doctors for regular medical care and treatment. At the very minimum, even if the request for house arrest is denied, he must be hospitalised for a sufficiently long time to comprehensively deal with all his medical issues.

On June 2, 2015, after a four-week delay from when the prison requested his transfer to a hospital, he was evaluated by Kuala Lumpur Hospital in a three-day visit. The doctors reported to him orally that he requires further evaluation and treatment relating to a number of medical issues including irregular blood pressure, a 4 cm growth on his kidney – requiring a CT scan, gastritis – requiring a gluten-free diet, and a shoulder muscle tear and chronic arthritis – requiring intensive physiotherapy. Anwar has also lost 6 kg (13 pounds) since his initial detention. The prison says it has received no medical reports from the hospital requesting the further testing – and it has no facilities for any testing or treatment of these conditions.

Anwar is being held in solitary confinement in hot and humid conditions with minimal ventilation, which are exacerbating his health problems. In addition, he has received only rare family visits once in three weeks, despite a doctor recommending he be allowed to see his family weekly. Family members are denied physical contact with him and speak to him through a phone across a glass panel. Requested visits with counsel are limited to twice a week with much scrutiny of lawyer's files and documents. Anwar is also being harassed by being checked every 15 minutes in his cell around the clock. Since his discharge from hospital about three weeks ago, he was visited once briefly in prison by a physiotherapist who provided some minimal manipulation therapy.

"The injustice being perpetrated against Anwar continues," said Sivarasa Rasiah, Anwar's counsel. "The international community should be alarmed by Anwar's deteriorating health, which has been greatly exacerbated by his being denied access to required care and facilities while he has been wrongly detained," he added.

Anwar's detention was ordered by the Federal Court on February 10, 2015, after it affirmed a five-year sentence on fabricated sodomy charges. Amnesty International designated Anwar a prisoner of conscience on February 17, 2015, and said the court's decision was a "deplorable judgment, and just the latest chapter in the Malaysian authorities' relentless attempts to silence government critics." And Human Rights Watch said the Federal Court decision was a "travesty of justice."

Anwar is in fact imprisoned because he presents a democratic and non-violent threat to Prime Minister Najib Razak. This is the second time Anwar has been subjected to a politicallymotivated prosecution under the same government. And it takes place in the context of numerous opposition leaders, journalists, and activists, including Anwar’s daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar MP, having been arrested, charged, and or detained under the country’s draconian Sedition Act and other oppressive laws.

Anwar: Pakatan lives on in substance

Posted: 18 Jun 2015 12:05 AM PDT

Pakatan Rakyat may be dead formally but still lives on in substance, says former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim who was instrumental in setting up the coalition that lasted for seven years.

“I have followed the latest developments that have impacted the formal Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

“However, in substance, the cooperation between the three parties at state and parliamentary level to oppose greed and injustices by BN still goes on,” he said in a note was made public by his lawyer and Subang MP R Sivarasa.

Anwar was in February sentenced to five years in jail for sodomy, a charge he claims is politically motivated.

Home Ministry denies blocking mail for Anwar

Posted: 17 Jun 2015 09:15 PM PDT

The Home Ministry has denied blocking mail intended for the incarcerated opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

It told the Parliament today that there was also no complaints from Anwar against the Sungai Buloh prison since he was jailed on Feb 10.

"Nevertheless, some parties outside the prison who have certain interests have made all sorts of allegations against the management of Sungai Buloh prison in relation to Anwar's treatment," it said in a written reply.

The ministry was responding to a question from Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PAS-Bachok) (photo), who asked yesterday for the number of complaints that Anwar had lodged, and the number of letters, postcards and books whose delivery has been blocked by prison authorities.

Anwar is serving a five-year jail sentence after being found guilty of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. He has maintained that he is innocent.

In its reply, the ministry also said that mail for Anwar are subject to the Prison Regulations 2000 and the Prison Department's standard operating procedures.

"In relation to that, it is not blocked by the prison management. Anwar is also not barred from other amenities and equipment offered to other prisoners based on the prison's regulations and procedures," it said.

Anwar wants Ramli Yusuff to testify before Sodomy II review

Posted: 15 Jun 2015 11:29 PM PDT

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today filed an application to have former Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Ramli Yusuff testify before the sodomy review hearing to prove there was a political conspiracy against him.

The application was filed by Anwar’s lawyer N. Surendran at the Federal Court this morning.

Surendran said Ramli would be called as a witness as his testimony in lawyer Rosli Dahlan’s suit against 17 defendants touched on a conspiracy in the “black eye” incident during investigations into Anwar’s first sodomy case.

“All the main characters in Sodomy I are also key players in Sodomy II, lending credence to Anwar’s argument of a political conspiracy against him,” he said.

Anwar in his application said Ramli, in a sworn statement dated May 27, had “strongly supported the conclusion that he is a victim of political conspiracy and false declarations”.

Ramli had allegedly said the former attorney-general Tan Sri Mohtar Abdullah, current A-G Tan Sri Gani Patail and former police chief Tan Sri Musa Hassan had conspired in Anwar’s black eye incident in 1998, where Anwar was attacked by then inspector-general of police Tan Sri Rahim Noor.

According to Ramli’s statement, Anwar said the three individuals had ordered Ramli to lodge a police report against Anwar and arrange for a doctor to claim that he had tried to hurt himself.

Anwar said Gani was the current A-G who had charged Anwar with sodomy this time around while Tan Sri Shafee Abdullah, who was appointed prosecutor in the case after being issued a fiat by the A-G, was an advisor and personal lawyer to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak – Anwar’s political rival.

“Thus I respectfully state that Ramli Yusuf’s statement is credible and extremely important for my case to prove that political conspiracy does exist,” he said.

On February 10, the Federal Court rejected Anwar’s final appeal in his sodomy case and upheld his five-year jail sentence.

The Court of Appeal on March 7 last year overturned the High Court’s acquittal of Anwar after finding him guilty of committing sodomy against his ex-aide. – June 10, 2015.

Statement on Pakatan Rakyat

Posted: 15 Jun 2015 11:25 PM PDT

Perutusan DS Anwar mengenai Pakatan Rakyat

Press Release: DSAI’s message to the public on Pakatan Rakyat

Yesterday, I met Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Sungai Buloh prison to consult on legal matters. I reproduce below his message to political allies and the public, given during that meeting:

“I am concerned with recent events affecting Pakatan Rakyat, which was formed as an alternative to the failed political system and poor governance under the Barisan Nasional.

I regret that a resolution to sever ties with the DAP was accepted at the PAS muktamar. I urge our political ally PAS to review that resolution which was passed without debate, and meanwhile not to implement it.

The DAP has long been our friend and comrade, committed to our great struggle for change. I know too that the DAP stands with us in our endeavour to ensure PR remains viable and united as an alternative to the people.

Under the BN, the situation is increasingly dire. The Rakyat are now further oppressed by GST and the massive 1MDB losses; while racial and religious polemic show no signs of abating.

It is the great hope of the Rakyat that Pakatan Rakyat will march forward to resolve the political uncertainty and economic troubles that plague our country under the rule of the BN.”

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also sent separate personal messages in relation to this to Sdr Lim Kit Siang and Datuk Seri Tuan Guru Hj Abdul Hadi Awang.

MENGAPA NAJIB BEGITU BERIA SANGAT DGN 1MDB?

Posted: 12 Jun 2015 08:03 PM PDT

DR M DROPS NEW BOMBSHELL: 'Stupid' of Najib to let Jho Low 'persuade' him to form 1MDB

1. From the comments on my blog and the questions I have been asked by people while shopping, it is clear that many do not know much about 1MDB. They know enough that Najib has done something wrong with the RM42 billion borrowed money, but are not clear about what is so wrong that I should call upon him to resign.
2. So I think I need to explain why 1MDB is wrong in stages. The Terengganu Investment Authority
3. Firstly the attempt to hijack the Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA) money. Petronas pays 5% of its gross earnings to the Terengganu Government. Over the years their royalty has grown quite big.
4. Jho Low persuaded Najib to make the TIA into a sovereign fund for investment like the Kuwait Investment Fund but under Najib's control. Appointments of staff were made by Najib without Terengganu's knowledge. Terengganu agreed at first but when Najib decided to raise through bonds RM5 billion using Terengganu oil wells as collateral, the istana and the Government thought it was not right.
5. Terengganu requested that the issuance of the bonds be deferred. Najib went ahead. Terengganu accordingly withdrew as it cannot let its' oil wells be put at risk.
6. Jho Low then advised Najib that the Federal Government should guarantee the loan. Strictly speaking such a matter should be discussed and approved by Cabinet. There is no evidence that a cabinet paper was prepared and presented for approval despite the amount being unusually big. In fact for a long time Cabinet was not aware of the activities of 1MDB.
7. To avoid scrutiny by officials, the loan was classified as off – budget i.e. outside the annual budget presented to and approved by Parliament. Off – budget spending can be made but usually only limited in amount. RM5 billion have never been borrowed by Government or any of its agencies. It should not be off-budget. It should get Cabinet approval first and then presented to Parliament. None of these procedures were followed.
8. It is not clear whether any Government department or agencies have scrutinised the terms of the loans. But the terms were very unfavourable to 1MDB and the Government.
9. Goldman Sachs which was entrusted with raising the loan was given; i) Commission of 10% ii) The interest rate was fixed at 5.9%
10. What this means is that of the RM5 billion borrowed 1MDB would get only RM4.5 billion. Goldman Sachs would get RM500 million as commission, an inordinately large sum.
11. But 1MDB would pay 5.9% interest on the whole of RM5 billion. Since it gets only RM4.5 billion the rate of interest on this amount would be 6.6% plus. Goldman Sachs need not pay interest on the RM500,0000/- it got as commission.
12. Loans taken by Government or guaranteed by Government would normally carry 3% interest or less. But the 1MDB loan cost almost 7% interest i.e, about RM350 million a year or almost RM1 million per day.
13. Who approved such terrible terms for a loan to a government owned company? We would like to know who. There must be some documents with the signature of the approving authority. If not somebody needs to answer for this stupidity. Or is it abuse of authority.
14. But more loans were raised from local as well as foreign banks. In all RM42 billion were borrowed. It is not clear what the terms are. But interest on RM42 billion must come to almost RM3 billion a year. Unless the investment yield fantastic returns, the interest burden would sink 1MDB. In fact as everyone knows Ananda Krishnan had to make available RM2 billion to pay the interest. Is it a loan or a free gift? Later 1MDB had to sell shares or properties for USD1 billion (RM3.7 billion) in order to settle short term loan from a German bank.
15. 1MDB is effectively headed by the Prime Minister who is also the Minister of Finance. When loans of more than 100 million are raised for investment overseas Bank Negara has to approve. But the final approval must come from the Minister responsible. And the Minister responsible is also the effective head of 1MDB. Investments
16. The best known investments by 1MDB were in the purchase of power plants and Government land as well as private land. Power Plants
17. RM18 billion was spent to purchase IPP belonging to Ananda Krishnan, Genting Sanyen Power (now known as Kuala Langat Power Plant) and Jimah Energy.
18. The prices paid for Genting Sanyen and Ananda's IPP were well above market price. 1MDB also paid RM6 billion for unpaid loans. The Jimah IPP was to put up another power plant. But 1MDB had no money to build this plant
19. Genting Sanyen and Tanjung Energy (now known as Powertek Energy Sdn Bhd) were nearing expiration of their licenses. Had 1MDB waited until the licenses expired, the price would be next to nothing.
20. Why 1MDB did not wait until the expiry of the license is a mystery. Genting and Ananda clearly made more money than they were entitled to. One estimate is that the high price netted the sellers an extra RM3 billion. Besides they are relieved of the loan of RM6 billion.
21. So not only is the borrowing costly but the high cost of investments will mean low returns. Why is 1MDB so stupid.
22. As stated above 1MDB is unable to get the IPP listed again. Who would want to own overpriced and obviously unprofitable power plant. Purchase of Land
23. The land along Jalan Tun Razak was actually meant for an agency to build shops etc for Bumiputras. But instead the Government sold the 70 acres to 1MDB for RM320 million i.e. at RM 60/- psf. Land close by had been sold at RM7000 /-psf. 1MDB should pay at least RM3000 to RM4000 /- psf.
24. Government lost a huge amount of money from the sales. The question is why did the Government sell at such a low price. One cannot help thinking it is because the PM ordered the sale. If so it is wrong and it constitutes abuse of authority. The full value should be paid to the Government now.
25. Then 1MDB decides to sell a small part of the land at the price it bought the whole 70 acres of land. Payment was made by Tabung Haji even before the transfer of ownership was completed. Apparently 1MDB needed the money immediately.
26. The directors of 1MDB and Tabung Haji are the same people. They claim that they abstained from voting. But obviously it was not an arms– length deal.
27. If the Government could sell to 1MDB at RM60 /- psf, it should also sell at the same price to TH. But effectively it has used money saved by intending pilgrims to give enormous profit to 1MDB.
28. It is the same with the Sungai Besi airport land. 1MDB acquires it at the ridiculously low price of RM90 /- psf. The value of the land is at least RM2000 /- psf.
29. But 1MDB bought private land in Penang at a much higher price. Yet the land is not at the centre of the city, has more than 1000 squatters and has not obtained the Penang Government approval for development. Seems like 1MDB had overpaid the seller for useless land. Why? Assets
30. 1MDB claims it has assets worth RM52 billion.
31. So far no explanation has been given as to how these assets are valued. How much is the value of all the power plants. And how much are the prices of land worth?
32. Future values after development may be big but billions of Ringgits must be invested before the property can be sold. After deducting cost, the return cannot be very big. The power plants and the land cannot be worth RM52 billion.
33. Even if this money is used to repay debts, the disappearance of billions of Ringgit must be recovered, or 1MDB should be charged for the loss. - chedet.cc
