Monopoli BN Punca Kos Sara Hidup Tinggi

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 02:12 AM PDT

Harakah

Azmin Wants Parliament to Look at Dawama Finances

Posted: 02 Aug 2011 02:09 AM PDT

The Malaysian Insider

PKR deputy president Azmin Ali said he and other opposition MPs wished to know why Dawama was unable to turn a profit despite the "huge concession" awarded to it by DBP to print school textbooks.

"And (if) they get a huge concession but could not turn a profit, that means the management should be let go and not the workers," he told reporters after meeting with Dawama workers here.

Dawama last week ordered all 380 of its mainly Malay staff to take leave without pay indefinitely starting yesterday owing to financial difficulties.

It is understood that Dawama has cited its ongoing dispute with DBP — an agency under the Education Ministry — over school textbooks as reason for the action.

Dawama Workers Association president Zainal Awit said he was surprised to hear of the printer's financial woes as the company was supposed to make a profit of up to RM60 million each year.

Azmin, who is also Gombak MP, today urged the government to return Dawama's textbook concession to DBP and halt similar privatisation exercises, which he said only burdened workers when they invariably failed.

"Privatisation projects are meant to provide better service and ensure the welfare of workers… Instead, privatisation projects profit cronies within the administration while workers are sidelined and denied their rights," he said.

"We've seen today that the workers become the victims, not the management. In all privatisation projects, management is protected."

The Malaysian Insider reported in June that the crisis between DBP and Dawama could affect the supply of school textbooks for the 2012/13 term.

A source said the "cold war" had likely erupted after DBP appointed another party to print the textbooks, possibly offending Dawama, which holds a 12-year contract to print and market all books and magazines by DBP until 2014.

It is believed the bad blood between DBP and Dawama reached a critical level after DBP director Datuk Termuzi Abdul Aziz gave Dawama a deadline to buck up and overcome a decline in sales of DBP books and magazines over the past couple of years.

Originally known as Balai Pustaka, DBP is a government agency set up on June 22, 1956 with the purpose of pushing the Malay language as the national and official language of the country.

Based on previous media reports, DBP has recorded losses of between RM20 million and RM40 million every year since 2002.

STUDENT DIES OF LEPTOSPIROSIS
2011/08/01

KANGAR: A 16-year-old boy here became the first victim to die from leptospirosis in Perlis this year.

State health director Dr Mahani Yusoff, who confirmed the death of Mohd Zulkamal Piee, a Sekolah Menengah Tengku Sulaiman pupil, on June 29, said his death was due to infection caused by a bacteria commonly found in rat urine.

Mahani, however, assured that it was an isolated case and the student could have been infected by the bacteria at locations considered to be unhygienic, allowing for rats and other pests to breed and thus, encouraging the spread of infection.

She added symptoms could emerge even after 15 days following contact with the bacteria.

The victim's father, Piee Kasa, 46, said his son was not feeling well before he attended an educational camp in Bukit Ayer on June 26.

Piee said he picked up his son from Bukit Ayer after the camp ended and was shocked to see his condition worsen.

"I took him directly to the hospital where he was admitted to the emergency ward for treatment. Some blood test were done on him and three hours later, I was told that my son is dead."

MYSTERIOUS DEATHS IN BAKUN DAM AREA
Joseph Tawie August 1, 2011

Despite being notified of several mysterious deaths in the Bakun area, the Sarawak Health Department has done nothing.

KUCHING: Ten people who were hired by the Sarawak Forest Corporation (SFC) to "save" animals from being drowned, following the impoundment of the Bakun Dam, are now dead.

The dam was impounded in October last year. The 10 dead were allegedly killed by a mysterious disease.

Although the Health Depatment has been notified, it has done nothing, Bakun Community Safety Committee chairman Dr Ellie Luhat said today.

Luhat said the latest such death was 28-year-old Larry Kiding, a SFC worker who worked on the project.

Kiding's father, Jugah Anak Kudi, told FMT that his son fell gravely sick after returning from Bakun Dam.

"We sent him to the hospital, but the hospital did not know what caused his sickness. We sent him to a private clinic. Again, we were told that the doctor could not determine what made him sick.

"Two days later he passed away," said Jugah.

Angry and dissatisfied, Jugah asked for a post-mortem to be conducted on his son.

According to him, the doctors again could not determine the cause of his death.

The death of Jugah's son came to light after Luhat called for an investigation into the death of the 10 SFC workers.

He believes they could have been exposed to infectious and deadly diseases such as melioidosis and leptospirosis (known locally as 'penyakit kencing tikus').

"So far 10 persons have died from the mysterious diseases and a number of others have been infected," said Luhat.

Also in critical condition is the village penghulu (chief) who is in Bintulu Hospital.

More deaths

The penghulu was transported to the Bintulu Hospital when he collapsed during the recent visit of Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu Anak Numpang to the dam.

"They (the 10 workers) were involved in moving large animals from the Bakun Dam water catchment area to higher ground and fell sick upon completion of the work.

"There have also been several mysterious deaths over the years in that area including a cousin of mine.

"Because of this, we want the government to confirm and identify the diseases, so that immediate and remedial actions can be taken.

"This may include vaccination," Luhat said.

Melioidosis is caused by a bacterium (burkholderia pseudomailei) found in soil, rice fields and stagnant waters.

Victims acquire the disease when the contaminated soil comes in contact with an abraded area of the skin.

Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria called spirochete and is transmitted through contact with infected soil or water.

Angry 'spirits'

Luhat, who is a retired Sarawak Timber Development Corporation (STIDC) officer, has been actively involved in the dam.

He believes that the change of biodiversity could have resulted in the spread of the diseases.

Local people believed that the "spirits" of the jungles are angry over the contruction of the dam and the destruction of the surroundings.

They believed their dead ancestors are also angry that their graves (pendam) have been submerged by the dam water.

Luhat said that he is sending letters to the relevant authorities to alert them of the mysterious deaths.

"These diseases can affect the tourism industry apart from the lives of the workers and the local people.

"The diseases can also affect the government's plan to introduce aquaculture of 'empurau' which is Sarawak's most famous and expensive fish," he said, adding that the death of several tonnes of fish early this year could have been due to these diseases.

Luhat also wants the road from Bintulu to Bakun to be repaired as this is essential in the event of emergency.

Previously, it took slightly over two hours to travel by road to Bakun.

"But now it takes four or five hours, because of so many potholes caused by timber trucks," he said.
